Tapping the Scan Checkpoint Icon Doesn't Access the Camera Barcode Reader

In this article we will troubleshoot the officer complaint that when they tap the Scan Checkpoint icon to do a checkpoint scan it does nothing, the camera does not turn on the barcode reader to scan the checkpoint.

NOTE: Officers that are using the Silvertrac Mobile App should be familiar how the scan checkpoint feature works. Proper checkpoint scanning is demonstrated for both iOS and Android users in the Officer Manual and through the Orientation videos.

The checkpoint scan feature utilizes the devices camera and integrated barcode scanning ability.

Devices That Do Not Have an Integrated Barcode Scanner

If the device being used to report and scan checkpoints does not have built in barcode scanning capabilities it will be necessary to download a separate 3rd party barcode reader app.

Once the separate 3rd party barcode reader app has been downloaded on the device, the System Admin will need to edit the device accordingly in the Device Maintenance section.

To edit a device:

  1. Hover over the System Tab and click Device Maintenance.

  2. Select the Device you want to edit by clicking on the device description tile.

  3. Unselect the Use Integrated Barcode Scanner checkbox.

  4. Click the blue Save Device button.

Once the edit has been made on the web portal the officer will need to log off of the Silvertrac Mobile App and log back on to sync the change made.

When they log back on they will be able to scan checkpoints using the 3rd party barcode scanner app through the Silvertrac Mobile App.

Devices That Have an Integrated Barcode Scanner

Most newer smartphones that are used to report on the Silvertrac App already have built in capabilities to access the device camera as a barcode scanner.

The Use Integrated Barcode Scanner checkbox is therefore a default setting.

When a device with a built in barcode scanner is used to report and scan checkpoints but has the Use Integrated Barcode Scanner checkbox unchecked and no 3rd party barcode reader app installed it will not be able to function properly. This is the cause of the issue .

In order to restore proper use and functionality of the Scan Checkpoint feature the System Admin must check Use Integrated Barcode Scanner checkbox.

To check Use Integrated Barcode Scanner checkbox:

  1. Hover over the System Tab and click Device Maintenance.

  2. Select the Device you want to edit by clicking on the device description tile.

  3. Click the Use Integrated Barcode Scanner checkbox. The box will turn blue with a white checkmark in it.

  4. Click the blue Save Device button.

  5. Have the officer log off of the Silvertrac Mobile App and log back on to begin using the checkpoint scan feature.
